After finishing our program, we invite these teen pilots to join the Aviation
Scholarship Foundation Board of Directors.
Teen Pilot Hall of Fame >
Private Pilots, one and all!
These students spent two years worth of weekends learning to fly. Each student
passed our ground school, passed the FAA written exam, passed all flight lessons,
passed the FAA oral exam, and passed the FAA flight test.
1996 -- Keny Ruffin
Keny was our first glider scholarship
recipient. He received his glider
license within two years. He is
pictured with Harold Hurd in 1995.
Keny graduated from the Air Force
Academy and flies jets for the USAF.
Keny was also awarded funding
from the Gary Flight Academy, a
youth summer workshop at Gary
Airport.
1998 & 1999 -- Mark Hardy
Mark entered our glider program as
an eighth grade student in 1996
from Robbins, Illinois. He received
his glider license in 1998 and then
went on to receive his airplane
license in 1999. He was the first
student in our program to receive
both certificates. He was honored by
his Congressman, Jesse Jackson,
Jr. as the youngest pilot in the
Congressional district! Mark
attended Western Michigan and
majored in aviation. He also played
football. Today,
Mark sells general
aviation aircraft.
2002 -- John Taylor
John joined our ground school from St.
Rita High School in Chicago. He was the
first student in our 2001 class to pass the
FAA written exam. The class began a few
days before the terrorist attacks on 9-11
but he was not deterred! John did most of
his flying in a Cessna 172 with Marshall
Knox, the most veteran black flight
instructor in Illinois. John was not only a
solid pilot, he was also the first chair
saxophonist in the All City Catholic Band.
John joined the Air Force Reserves after
high school.

Any
teenager
who is
certified by
the FAA is
exceptional!
1997 -- Everette Motley
He began his training in April '96
when he was awarded a spot in
ASF's ground school. Six months
later, he passed the FAA written
exam with a 92%. He took his first
solo flight after 12 hours of flight
lessons. For his final FAA flight test,
he flew out of Midway Airport, in front
of a 737. He landed 90 minutes later
behind a corporate jet. Everette was
certified in less than 55 hours of
flight!
2003 -- Stephanie Crissey
We are pleased to present our first
female pilot! Stephanie joined our
program in 2001 and completed
her training two years later. She
pilots single-engine airplanes. She
reported improving her grades in
high school one level, to A's, after
starting flight school. Flying forced
her to get organized. Stephanie
joined an instrument ground school
in community college.
2005 -- Quinton Smith
He is our first student from Gary,
Indiana to complete his license.
Quinton now attends the aviation
program at Indiana State. His career
goal is to be a corporate pilot flying
small jets. Truly a member of the
Hip-Hop generation, we had more fun
working with Quinton than any other
student in our ten years. He now
serves on our Board of Directors,
helping us improve the program for the
future.
